Coded Crosswords
 Each square contains a number representing a letter of the alphabet; so, if you discover that 15 represents E you can insert the letter E wherever 15 appears (the Java version does this automatically). All letters of the alphabet are used. There are no regular plurals, capital nouns or non-whole (e.g. hyphenated) words. Each puzzle offers 3 letters to start you off.

Also known as "Arrow-Words", these feature clues inside the grid squares with arrows pointing to where the answers go. Of necessity the grid squares are bigger than usual and you may need to adjust dimensions before printing.

Novelty Crosswords
 01 covers the world of pop. Each clue consists of an artist and a year - the solution is a Number 1 hit for the artist in that year. 02 is a novelty puzzle only to the extent that its grid is a diamond shape. 03 has a Valentine's Day theme. 04 is more specialised, aimed at golf fans. 05 is a Christmas puzzle aimed mostly towards children. 07 is an unusual thematic puzzle.

US-Style Crosswords
 American puzzles are fully cross-checked. Because (in theory) a puzzle can be completed by solving only half the clues, the clues tend to be more challenging. A handful of these puzzles incorporate the popular US device of a theme centred on symmetrically placed solutions.

The last letter of each word is the first of the next, and no consecutive words run in the same direction.
